Australia High Commissioner to Fiji, His Excellency Mr. John Feakes visits the Kaiviti Silktails Centre of Excellence
Saturday 27th June – It was an absolute honour to have the Australian High Commissioner to Fiji, His Excellency Mr. John Feakes and his staff visit the KSRLFC Centre of Excellence in Lautoka.
The Australian Government has played a crucial role in the establishment of our franchise and in 2019 the Honourable Scott Morrison, Prime Minister of Australia announced that his Government would support the travel costs of the Kaiviti Silktails to participate in the NSW Ron Massey Cup.
This was a reflection of the importance Sports played in the relationship between both countries and further signifies the desire to support talented Fijian athletes to play elite sports in Australia and represent Fiji internationally.
The Kaiviti Silktails RLFC made an impressive start to the 2020 Ron Massey Cup season with a comprehensive 40-16 win over Windsor Wolves in Lautoka.
Unfortunately it was the last game the team played for the season as barely days after, COVID-19 shut down international travel, and NSWRL made a heartbreaking decision to cancel the competition.
In his address to the media and invited guests at the Press Conference at our facility, H.E. Mr. J. Feakes made the following announcement:
“Today, I am pleased to announce that the Australian Government will support the Silktails to get through this period and come back even stronger in 2021.
Following discussions with the Silktails, we have agreed to redirect money we would have spent on travel in 2020 to a range of activities, including:
• upgrading the Silktails’ Centre of Excellence
• retaining key Silktails staff
• establishing a training facility in Sigatoka and upgrading the existing training facility in Suva at the FNRL Headquarters
• supporting Fijian clubs’ participation in the 2020 Fiji National Rugby League competition, and
• helping secure a place for the Silktails in the 2021 NSWRL Ron Massey Cup.
We hope this support will help build the club’s foundations, so that they can continue where they left off when the competition restarts.
These are tough times. But Australia is committed to standing by the Silktails and our Fijian Vuvale.”
